.       ..     ...     ....   .....   .............................................................Before and during the war many types of cloth was produced including men’s suit material old material and various off-cuts and bits and pieces were shredded and re-spun to make "Shoddy", which was a sort of second grade suit material. It would seem very likely that any khaki that was not reusable would have been simply recycled in this way. Thousands of these tiny Flat or sew-through buttons of the 19th - 20th century from Trousers, shirts, suspenders with a major part being from shoddy are mostly found on land where this old cloth was dumped and ploughed into the soil. Below are some of the many buttons with makers marks..
Novelty trouser button 16mm in diameter. Bears the inscription 'You Liar'.   Research suggests that these were 'give aways' by jewellers when a man bought a wedding ring for his prospective wife. The idea was that it would be presented to the man by his wife when they had their first argument! This explanation was provided for me by a member of the British Button Society. It could be that there are other stories attached to them. They are not seen very often these days but I believe that there were quite a variety made in late 19th Century, in various types of metal and in differing quality. Found by Dave.S

Civilian & Military   lead 18th-20th century Dress weights, also used with Victorian swimming costumes, largest here 28mm dia
White metal Hem or dress weights are common finds found by Metal Detectorist's often mistaken for buttons. A small percentage were used as buttons but most are in fact Curtain or Hem Weights other names including penny weights or Dress weights. The poor Victorian woman sent to the beach in a hot, scratchy wool suit. Covered from head to toe in her bathing costume contained weights so she could demurely drown rather than have her skirts float up and titillate leering men with glimpses of stockinged ankles. These weights were also sown into the bottom corners of the Curtain Hems and at the bottom of each joined seam or in the seam of some Military jackets for example. The smaller size would be suitable for short lightweight curtains, the larger heavier weight being ideal for heavy fabric or any full length curtains. Largest shown 27mm dia through to 18mm dia of the smallest here. I have included a few different   types as a general guide.
These Hem weights below dating to the c.1900's   were discovered in an old suitcase.
Below are a typical range of small Copper-alloy or Brass rings which are very common finds by Detectorist's often when found are a complete mystery to what they are. In fact a large percentage are the remains of the backing section "outer ring" of an embroidered thread button average size 29mm diameter x 4mm thick. The rings which were embroidered on to these rings date from as early as the 17th century but more likely from the Early - Mid Eighteenth century. Its most likely that the rings with Chamfered sides like the single example here are the type used for these embroidered buttons. The group of copper-alloy rings shown here show the different thickness's and sizes which Detectorist's come across and are used in these buttons. allot of these copper-alloy rings have been manufactured for many other purposes. Not only were thread buttons less expensive than bone, wood or metal but they would not break during the strenuous beating and scrubbing. Unlike buttons made of other materials, thread buttons are soft and comfortable to lay against while sleeping. During the early-to-mid-eighteenth century some such officers and official's are described as having worn buttons of embroidered gold or gilded metallic cord or thread. These buttons would have been either made with cut bone centres or with supporting circular metallic loops like those shown here right of picture. The loops formed circular frames around and over which could be sewn/ threaded or embroidered the knotted pattern of the buttons, the completed buttons would then be sewn to the uniform.
This type of embroidered button is known as the Dorset Button. The Dorset button began in Shaftesbury, Dorset probably between the years 1680 - 1700, The first buttons were known as "High Tops" and "knobs" and were made from a disc cut from Dorset Horn sheep. The disc was covered by a small piece of material and worked with a needle and thread to make a conical shape or knob shape depending on the type of button required. The high-tops were worn by gentlemen on their hunting waistcoats and also used for ladies dresses, other types of buttons were then developed using copper wire twisted on a spindle with the ends cut and dipped in solder, children of both sexes were employed as "Winders & and Dippers" others threaded the rings and were called Stringers. An alloy for the rings was invented and old buttons made, these rings show no signs of rust. There were three grades of ring the lower two grades were sold in this country. In 1850 a button making machine shown in the greta exhibition of London brought a tragic end to the industry. Another name used for these rings are fabric covered or thread cartwheel buttons.
